EEK!

Why are nail trims so important for your pet and what to do if your pet is difficult...

One reason is that long nails can cause the paw to splay and change the gait of your pet. This often leads to arthritis in the toe joints and even higher up. Imagine a ballet dancer on pointe...

Graceful yet powerful with proper toenail length she is able to dance elegantly. Now imagine she gets a pedicure with long toenails, up to 1 inch. Can she dance on pointe or do you think the resulting pain will be unbearable? Over time her regular gaits will be affected as she shifts weight back to avoid pressure on her toes. She may even snag one of carpeting or in bed tearing it off to the quick. An infection may result. She also may have one that curls under- piercing the pad of her toe and becoming ingrown.

Your pet may also endure pain, infection and you may end up with a vet bill to treat. All easily avoided with a regular trim

A cat with an ingrown nail. The nail has curled around the first toe and has pierced the pad. Leading to infection and pain this will need to be cut free at the vets, cleaned and the kitty started on antibiotics. The nails are a source of bacteria, fungi and more so this condition needs to be treated carefully.

Another poor kitty whose nail has grown around into the pad requiring surgery to remove and a full treatment of topical and internal antibiotic treatments.

A bunny is at the same risk as any pet with long nails. Easy to get snagged and torn, painful to walk on and lets not forget the risks of scratches to any pet owner!

You can see with the long neglected nails of this greyhound he has shifted his weight back to relieve some of the pressure. His toes are also starting to splay or separate which can cause arthritis. He is also at risk of catching a nail inside or out and ripping it off at the nail bed requiring a trip to the veterinarian for stitches and pain reliever.

What a relief! The same greyhound after a nail trim and some nail grinding. They are also extremely painful and need a veterinarian, sedation, treatment and medication for a full recovery. Sometimes the nail never grows back. Way more costly than regular nail trims.

Getting Started!

Start by touching your pets feet and nails daily in a pleasant and relaxing manner. See my previous post for more info on this.

Get your supplies at hand and get organized. If you are going to trim at home then you need some simple supplies. Kwik Stop or a similar cauterizing powder. This one also has a mild pain reliever in it. If you accidentally "quic" you pet place some on your finger or dip the nail directly into the powder. Then apply pressure for one minute. Flour or corn starch can also be used in a pinch. Although scary for everyone no-one has ever died from a nail trim!

Kitty, bunny and guinea pig nail clippers are smaller and easier to use.

The scissor type clipper are the best type because you are able to shave off bits of nails and if your pet moves during you can release the pressure easily. They also apply a direct pressure instead of a twisting.

Here is a step by step chart showing exactly how! With dark nails when you trim just a bit off it will look chalky. That means you can trim a bit more. Then when you see a wetness appear and then a small dot appear stop! Usually the same length is good for all nails.

A dremel or nail grinder is great for pets that really hate nail clipping. With practice many simply do not care. Simply hold the filer against the nail. It grinds off nail while the vibration causes the quic to recede and instantly cauterizes. You can also usually take the nail shorter than with clippers and therefore lasts longer. It also provides a smooth surface on the nail limiting scratches to the human.

You do want to hold the nail steady and use one that functions at a low speed as a bounces dremel can catch hair or skin.

If all of this makes you feel a bit green then ask around for a vet clinic or groom shop you are able to get to with your pet regularly. Many accept walk ins and charge a more than reasonable price. Be honest about your pet if they try to bite or act up for nail trims. With practice and patience most settle into the routine!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://vanitywithhumanitypetgrooming.blogspot.com/2011/07/nail-trims-eek.html' title='Nail Trims! With many families starting their vacations summer and late spring are the ideal time to bring home that new family member!

Then begins the house training, don't eat that! Don't bite this! Add the basics such as walking on a leash, sit, stay and come and you have fun filled and challenging days!

An important part of socializing your puppy is introducing him or her to grooming! At the very least they will need a nail clip every six to eight weeks and most will need the occasional bath.

Poodle Mix Puppies

Haircut puppies such as the Yorkie, poodle or poodle mixes, and some terrier breeds will need a haircut or trim every 1 - 2 months. Shedding dogs such as the golden, Labrador and collie will also need a bath every 2 - 3 months depending on their environment and long coated breeds will need a tidy up and some light trimming.

Labra-doodle Puppy

Some things you can practice at home to make grooming an enjoyable instead of tear filled experience (for both of you!) are:

- Touch paws, toe nails, between the toes, legs and all over as much as possible. Even if you are not going to clip nails your self hold up a nail clipper to each nail and give lots of praise. If you puppy fusses- persist gently and then when they relax reward!!

- DO a gently puppy massage every day as many times as possible- best to do during a quiet time! Start with the neck and chest and with gently hands touch your puppy all over!!

- Manners!! Basic obedience skills and socialization are crucial for you lifetime of happiness together! Invest in a good class, google training, go to the library and try to focus on positive reinforcement methods meaning your pup is rewarded for good behaviour (meaning it is more likely repeated) and discouraged from bad behaviour (will likely decrease).

-Get thee to a groomer!! At the very least your puppy should visit a kind, gentle groomer with experience handling puppies at least once before they are sixteen weeks! This ensures that they are familiar with the procedures BEFORE that first long haircut appointment.

Persian Kitten

Welcoming a new kitten to your home is always a joy although also needs time, training and patience! From introducing the litter pan to training what to bite or not to bite while teething to stay off of the drapes!!

Grooming is also crucial for kittens to be started as young as possible. Long haired breeds that are prone to matting need to be brushed and combed on a daily basis. Short haired breeds also need to be brushed weekly to help prevent that dreaded hairball. Ears are cleaned and nails clipped (even back nails for declawed cats!) The occasional bath can also be needed for flea treatments or the kitten that gets into the paint!

Tips to make grooming easier:

- Touch and massage your kitten every single day all over especially feet and nails! If you are not going to trim them yourself then hold the clippers to each nail praising as you go. Choose a quiet time for this activity!

- Get thee to a groomer!! Introduce your kitten to a groomer BEFORE 16 weeks at minimum. Especially those breeds prone to matting that may need a haircut.

Tips For Both!

-Softly touch and the brush of the fur (gently of course!) daily for a few minutes at least.

- Introduce the comb the same way. Softly comb through the hair gently for at least a few minutes every day careful not to snag at tangles!

-Touch each nail with clippers even if you are not clipping them yourself and praise. If your pet cries, screams and wiggles stay calm and persist. Letting go and stopping only teaches him or her that if they make a fuss...we stop and let go! Not good with a lifetime of nail trims ahead of them!

- Use tearless and hypo-allergenic shampoos formulated specifically for kittens and puppies and read the label carefully.

- Use only puppy or kitten formulated products and read the label carefully. Flea products especially should not be used under 5 months without consulting your vet or groomer!

What do I need?

Rubber Curry useful for short coated breeds (and to chew on!)

Grey hound comb (also available with a handle) used for checking that all undercoat is out or gently removing matts.

Slicker Brush!!! Most important item! Use a soft slicker appropriate to the size your pet will be. Use BASE of slicker first on the coat- the tip will scratch- ask your groomer for a demo!

-Do not use human products! We have a different skin PH and this can cause skin problems and soreness!

- Ask your veterinarian, friends, co-workers and neighbours for a referall to a groomer.

Visist thier shop ahead of time if possible or ask if they can watch them with another pet. She had her jaw broken (probably from a kick) her tongue slit as it was in the way and her ears staple gunned to a wall where she tore herself free. Her teeth were filed and then she was abandoned at the local shelter. All before six months of age. I saw her when I was at the shelter and quickly took her home because she was so fearful she could not be adopted to a regular home and was ready to be transferred from a no-kill shelter to a kill shelter where her days would be numbered. Definitely not a dog that could be dropped off for a groom at a regular groom shop successfully.

Five years later she is re-socialized, friendly, loving and has even begun work as my service dog for mobility issues due to the fact that I also cope with disabilities. See article with photographs at http://www.stellasmagazine.com/a-groomer-with-a-disability-by-cass-lambert/

Lesha in her new role as service dog. She wears a harness with packs to store items likes keys, wallet etc. in. That also has a handle to help me be mobile on bad days. She is trained to lean into her harness to help balance me and to offer power in going up and down stairs etc. She takes her job very seriously so I limit the hours she works using a walker and cane when able to. With all of our recent snow and ice in another Ontario winter she is a lifesaver!!

Why do matted pets NEED to be shaved? Can't we just brush it out?!

Severely Matted Shih Tzu/Poodle mix- Just a year old and never has been to the groomer. He will have to be closely shaved which will be uncomfortable although he will feel MUCH better after!

Matted hair in dogs and cats... Why does your groomer INSIST that your pet is shaved? A matted coat is a coat in which bundles of hair become tangled, usually next to the skin, and form tight bundles of dead skin, undercoat, hair and debris. These CANNOT be brushed out is the matt is so tight that a comb cannot be slid underneath.

Shaving is required and even that may be painful. Severe matting reduces the blood flow to the skin and once this is released during grooming a blue/purple burnt or sore looking area appears as blood flows back into the deprived area. Ideally grooming including brushing and combing regularly will occur preventing matts. At its worst stage often a surgical blade is required with sedation to remove severe neglect matting. Whenever matting gets wet (bathing) it shrinks closer to the skin requiring a closer shave to remove.

A severely matted cat. The matted hair actually comes off in one piece! Poor kitty!

NEVER use scissors to remove matting, especially behind the ears! Most groomers will shave this out for you at a minimal cost. Matting also hides skin conditions including moles, burrs etc. and can increase the risk of cuts during grooming.Smaller matts can be brushed out carefully with the use of dematting tools that cut the hair as well as thinner shears and a comb. Due to the risk to the skin underneath this is best left to professionals. Matts behind the ear, in sanitary areas, inner thigh or armpit CAN NOT be dematted safely and comfortably and need to be shaved. Badly matted ears are best shaved in two steps- first outer ear then inner ear to prevent hematomas, or a blood blister within the ear. Some times this occurs anyways and a cloth or vetwrap around the head to prevent damage from shaking can help prevent this.

This pups collar was actually matted to him and had to be shaved out in pieces.

I always recommend an antifungal/antibiotic shampoo and conditioner in a cool water bath afer shaving and before finishing to improve the quality of the skin along with air drying or a cool setting on a dryer. Matting also increases the probability of cuts as the matted hair pulls the skin into the clipper during the initial shavedown. Unfortunately there is no way to prevent this other then PREVENTION!!

Greyhound comb- when finished brushing you should be able to run this comb all over your pet easily.

Brush your cat or dog daily to prevent mats!! I recommend "commercial break" brushing. Wait until commercials come on, call your pet to you and brush until the end of the commercials concentrating on one section only. A simple slicker brush (focus on using heel of the brush first) and a greyhound comb is all that is needed for longer coats. For shorter coats a rubber curry or "zoom groom" bush (also can be used during the bath!) and a greyhound comb is all that is needed.

Slicker brush- I recommend using a soft or medium and work from the heel of the brush in section.

Zoom Groom or a rubber curry is great on shorter breed dogs and can even be used in the bath!

Freshly shaved and released from the awful matting!! Visiting a shelter to assess a dog for a client, noticed her and was told "If you can get her out of her kennel, you can HAVE her" Rescued by myself she is now working successfully as my service dog and has been for over a year currently waiting to pass her access test.

Dogs with fear aggression have quickly become my most common and regular clients and are often an unnecessary source of embarrassment and stress for the owner. Most of these pets are turned away from regular groom shops or sedated due to lack of experience and skills on behalf of the groomer. My 10+ years of experience training dogs with this condition brings a unique ability to grooming these pets safely and humanely. ALL pets with this condition are welcome in my shop.

The Merck Veterinary manual defines fear aggression as: "Fear aggression has the following necessary condition: aggression that consistently occurs concomitant with behavioral and physiologic signs of fear as identified by withdrawal, passive, and avoidance behaviors associated with the sympathetic nervous system. The following condition is sufficient: as above and the aggression is accompanied by urination or defecation, or when the aggression is only active (beyond just posturing) when the target of the aggression is not interacting with the subject. The actual behaviors associated with fear, fear aggression, and any other aggression that is primarily driven by anxiety are poorly qualified and quantified.

However, in contrast to dominance/impulse control aggression, the dog relinquishes control and withdraws. Only when the dog can no longer avoid or withdraw does frank aggression occur. Also, unlike dominance/impulse control aggression, these dogs never deliberately provoke a situation or initially and voluntarily contribute to its escalation. In extreme cases, the sufficient conditions are clear; in less clear situations, which could be due to uncertainty on the animal’s part, caution is urged in ruling out all other aggressions. The most likely diagnosis is the one that is most consistent with all signs and criteria. Fear aggression does not have to occur consistently, although identification of the fearful stimuli will permit assessment of the extent to which the behaviors are consistent and pose a predictable risk. "

Fear aggression is also seen in cats, in which it is one of the most common types of aggression, both toward other cats and people. "Typically these pets present a quick aggressive episode as a result to a confined and controlled experience ie: on the grooming table. However, this is a PREDICTABLE response in most pets and with caution and watching for signs of stress- licking of lips, urination, defecation, stiffness and avoidance- many fear attack episodes can be avoided with breaks and caution on behalf of the groomer watching for tell tale signs. With time although fear aggression cannot be cured it can be controlled and managed and with calm, consistent HUMANE handling by a groomer, incidents become less and less frequent. In some cases sedation is safer for both the pet and the groomer but this decision must be made by all parties including a veterinarian experienced in aggression.

Ketny, now a 12 yr old German Shepard came to me when she was 9 with serious inter-dog aggression, fear aggression and the worst case of separation anxiety I had ever seen including jumping out of second floor glass windows. After three years of training she became a successful therapy dog visiting secure wards (Alzheimer's, strokes, mental illness patients) for several years. She became quite attached to her regulars and them to her until she retired as required at the age of 12.

Cats can also be fear aggressive especially if they have never been groomed before and then are suddenly held down for a shave down due to matting. Cats have very thin skin and therefore a lot of training and skill is required by the groomer to shave them with out tearing and/or burning their skin. They are the most dangerous fear aggressive pet to groom for the groomer as a cat bite, especially a puncture usually requires 14 days of antibiotic intravenous treatment and can end a groomers career. Gentle, human, quiet and preventative handling (e-collars etc.) are of utmost importance for both the cat and the groomer. They are of course welcomed into my salon and often after several human visits are quite easy to groom and seem to enjoy the process and attention!

With time, human consistent, and empathetic handling while being groomed even the most fearful pets can become relaxed and even doze off after their spa days!!

Happy New Year and Happy Holidays to all our wonderful clients!!

Wishing everyone a happy 2010 and thank you for being such fantastic clients. This is due to the fact that I have several medical illnesses that have required me to endure chemotherapy treatments and surgery many times in the last eight years and it would be easier to work from home.. Many of them are auto immune related. The side effects of all these treatments can be more dangerous than the illnesses they seek to control causing weight loss, weight gain, colitis, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, heart, liver damage and worse. I am also more susceptible to colds, flu’s and other illnesses. Due to colitis, even taking an antibiotic for one day risks my life and unfortunately causes me to miss work. They seem very patient however and simply reschedule as many of them personally or their pets have disabilities and so are very understanding.

I was referred to a Pain Doctor to control the debilitating pain these illness cause although I had enjoyed a training career for over ten years it was becoming to much. I successfully attended a grooming academy and was very surprised at how hard it was! See I have worked with many different species of animals and non animals throughout my entire life as a trainer. I have trained everything from hamsters to horses as I study animal ethology or how animals learn as a lifelong hobby and am even working towards my BA.

Animal ethology is defined as being the scientific study of animal behaviour, especially as it occurs in a natural environment. I have always held a particular interest in aggression as a behavioural process rather than in a particular animal group and often study one type of behaviour in a number of unrelated species. I find understanding how animals think and learn crucial to being a successful and humane groomer. I also share my home with a number of pets including (current at the time of publication only) 5 cats, 3 dogs, a rabbit, a tank of vicious fish (including Jack the homicidal Cichlid) and a horse. On really hard days these pets offer so much to me. Inspiration to get out of bed and feed them, motivation to keep moving and of course unconditional love.

The greatest challenge I face with a permanent disability is coping with the daily and sometimes hourly changes of my condition. I have Severe Pelvic Nerve Neuropathy. I had been in such severe pain for so long it caused severe, irreparable and incurable damage to the nerve endings in my pelvis. The bad news is there is no cure and my doctors are not even sure how to treat it and only know that it may end in my complete reliance on a wheelchair or worse with in a few years time. The worse news is it causes debilitating pain. Unfortunately nerve pain cannot be managed by any pain medications including the strongest of narcotic medications. On days I wake up and cannot walk or move my fingers it can be difficult to get started and get to work. On these days I am very grateful and always surprised at how empathetic my furry clients are! They always seem to respect my slow and sore motions on bad days. Another way I cope with this challenge is by building a repeat client list full of kind, good and understanding dogs and people. I specialize in pets with disabilities however also groom all breeds of cats and dogs and offer nail trims for small pets. These pets may have diabetes, tumours, arthritis, behavioural issues such as fear aggression and my experience training, empathy and handling offers both the pet and the client peace of mind!

One of the most unfortunate challenges I face every day is that people sometimes are very prejudiced towards a person with a disability and assume they cannot do anything. That is simply not true. With the support of my community and accommodations in the workplace, and positive attitude a person coping with a disabling condition can accomplish anything.

Our First Open House was A Success!!! Thank you for the chance to meet some wonderful local families and pets!

Nail grinding is more humane, offers a smoother surface, helps recede the quick and once at a maintenance length lasts longer. Most dogs fuss for the first few then settle and are relaxed for the rest. Dogs that usually need to be held and fight regular trims seem to accept nail grinding without incident!

How to tell: If you can hear the "click-click-click" of your dog coming closer it is time for a grinding!

Our paw print balloons but a smile on many kids faces!!

Our current coupon is a free first groom with a NEW Adoption Placement being offered by many of our local rescues. Many of them are auto immune related and all of them are incurable. The second last treatment for just one of my conditions caused me to gain over 90lbs in less than six months on my slim 120lb frame. The side effects of all these treatments can be more dangerous than the illnesses they seek to control causing weight loss, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, heart and liver damage and even seizures that lasted 11 months and caused the loss of my drivers licence for over two years.

Working is very important to me as it provides quality of life during a difficult time and of course I need the benefits for my expensive medications. My most recent treatment, which I had to stop in the last few months due to loss of benefits, caused the opposite problem which was to loose all that weight in only a few months. I am also more susceptible to colds, flu’s and other illness. Due to my bowel condition, even taking an antibiotic for one day risks my life and unfortunately causes me to miss work. My clients seem very patient however and simply reschedule. Many of them are persons with disabilities themselves so are very understanding.

At the end of the second most recent chemotherapy to control just one of my chronic illnesses my Specialist decided that to continue to try to treat one of my illnesses was simply too dangerous, and as a result I was referred to a Palliative Pain Specialist to control the debilitating pain this illness causes. This occurred with in a few months of me returning to work at a large pet store chain. Unfortunately my original position was not available and I was very interested in attending grooming academy so very thankful for this opportunity off I went! I was very surprised at how hard it was! See I have worked with many different species of animals and non animals throughout my entire life as a trainer. I have trained everything from hamsters to cows (and of course dogs!) as I study animal ethology or how animals learn as a lifelong hobby and am even working towards my BA.

I also share my home with a number of pets including (current at the time of publication only) 5 cats, 3 dogs, a hamster, a rabbit, a tank of vicious fish (including Jack the homicidal Cichlid) and a horse.

See when I had watched groomers work in the pet store I used to work at, it always looked so easy to me, although it did not always look “fun”. I had no idea the hours and hours of studying required, both in the classroom and around the grooming table. Not only to make a pet look and feel great, but to do it as safely as possible for everyone involved. Dogs are sharp at five out of six sides after all! A bite from a cat can literally end your career.

The greatest challenge I face as a groomer with a permanent disability is coping with the daily and sometimes hourly changes of my condition. I have Severe Pelvic Nerve Neuropathy. How this was explained to me was that I had been in such severe pain for so long it caused severe, irreparable and incurable damage to the nerve endings in my pelvis. The bad news is there is no cure and my doctors are not even sure how to treat it and only know that it may end in my complete reliance on a wheelchair or worse with in a few years time. The worse news is it appears to be spreading and is affecting my ability to control my bladder and bowel function. I was on many medications for chemotherapy to control the severe and debilitating pain of this new incurable illness and have a very limited strict diet that I have to adhere to daily.

A main challenge I face is when I am in debilitating pain. Unfortunately nerve pain cannot be managed by any pain medications including the strongest of narcotic medications. On days I wake up and cannot walk or move my fingers it can be difficult to get started and get to work. On these days I am very grateful for assistance with dogs that are difficult to groom and limit the amount of clients per day and use my wheelchair/walker for extra support. Another way I cope with this challenge is by building a repeat client list full of kind, good and understanding dogs and people. I find that on my bad days the dogs seem generally to behave better almost as if they sense this. I manage my pain with medications such as anti neuropathy pills that are thought to possibly interrupt the constant signals my nerves constantly and continually send. This at the best of times can be excruciating. Sometimes these pills even help!

On good days I am able to groom with minimal issues. I try to groom as gently and humanely as possible and also with respect to how dogs may feel on any particular day. I can empathize that just like me they may not feel great and be a bit grouchy, especially if they are also coping with large tumours that may be painful or conditions such as hip dysplasia or even arthritis. I am currently trying to build a home grooming business and have decided to specialize in pets with disabilities themselves as I beleive I have a particular empathy and understanding of thier needs. I am not strong or big enough to force a large dog to stand still and have adapted. I try to use their anatomy and how they move to make my grooming job easier.

For instance recently I had a 10 year old 80 lb border collie that lives on a farm with a duck pond she loves to swim in and is visiting my groom shop for her regular haircut on my table that did not like her front feet touched due to arthritis and is coping with a large inoperable tumour on her left side due to a thyroid condition. She also suffers from tumours throughout her abdomen and legs and is not able to stand patiently for very long. Now I know at 98 lbs (current at the time of publication) I do not stand a chance of “making” her do anything and want to be as humane as possible so the way I would trim her right foot was to stand on her right side, trim her right foot with my curve shears after combing the right foot out in a circular pattern and then lifting her left foot gently up and straight back and holding with my left hand as I trim with the curve shears in my right hand. I also have an assistant lift the leg for me on a particularly bad day or particularly strong dogs.

My assistance holding up the border collie's off side and myself stablizing the leg so that I am able to scissor safely. Notice we are now also on the floor.

For grooming around her tumours I use touch and either clip combs or thinning shears for saftey. Particularily if the tumours like the one on her belly are moveable. The risk of injury to her is great so I take extra care and keep one hand on the tumour, moving it aside if possible at all times. This can be a challenge but is worth it at the end. I also tend to make the hair on the larger tumours shorter and do more hand scissoring to “disguise” the lumps and bumps. Owners are greatly appreciate this. I also offer her a lot of breaks and even will groom from the floor. I am also investing in various slings and nooses that offer additional support on the table for my pets with disabilities as well as making my own job easier.

The reason it works is that dogs are similar to horses. They need at least three legs to stand. Therefore if you hold up one- they have to stand on 3 and still or else they risk “loosing control” and falling which they seem to dislike. They sometimes will struggle at first to avoid the scissors which they fear of course. If this happens I always worry the dog may hurt themselves panicking to get away or off the table so I put gentle pressure on the back of the right elbow or just above the fetlock joint with my left hand while my assistant holds up the left front leg gently. This makes it more difficult for the dog to lifting the leg and/or trying to move it forward while I am trimming. It is non painful and as long as I and my helper stay calm and non-reactive she settles down and I can get my trimming done safely, quickly and with her more relaxed leading to a more positive experience for her. This also helps any fear she may feel in anticipation of the grooming table for next time making the next groomer’s job easier.

The photo above shows a farrier standing underneath a 1500lb horse while he locates a hole in the metal shoe with his fingers so he can start hammering a metal nail in with force. A farrier is a person that trims horse’s hooves and puts metal horseshoe on. All horses, ponies, and donkeys need their hooves trimmed every six to eight weeks through out their entire life to avoid painful conditions. Horses can lives until their late twenties. Ponies can live until their forties.
If he “misses” the hole he may end the horse riding/working career permanently. Not to mention the horses reaction to this sudden and severe pain as this would probably be rearing up and crashing down on top of the farrier. Is this dangerous for both of them? Yes. He has one leg held between his knees and because the horse is standing on three legs he usually stands still. Horses hate falling more than anything, similar to dogs so they are reluctant to put themselves in situations that may result in their greatest fear.

Horses are usually trained to stand calmly like this big guy from birth because horses need to see a farrier through their entire lives. Easier for everyone if no one gets hurt. Farrier’s charge anywhere from $30 dollars for a trim to $300 and more for shoes like this guy is getting. Shoes protect their feet from surfaces like cement and also can help prevent work related injuries- slipping on wet grass as a racehorse. This guy probably pulls a cart. However if this farrier attaches the shoe incorrectly he can actually cause injury instead of preventing it because the shoes are metal and can have sharp edges. Farrier’s train throughout their entire lives and often attend a two or three year college program before they can begin their apprenticeship with an experienced farrier. The apprenticeship lasts typically two to three years.

Another thing I am currently doing and am always open to suggestions is modifying my equipment. For instance I picked lighter scissors knowing I am more prone to conditions such as repetitive stress disorder and arthritis. I also started to take piano lessons after my pain doctor recommended playing with clay (with both hands!) at night while I watch TV to strengthen my hands hoping to prevent anything from worsening. I am currently looking at dryer handles to prevent repetitive stress conditions in the hands and arms. I am also researching grooming table slings for dogs missing legs or with other health conditions such as the Border collie’s. The shampoos and conditioners I have selected are hypo-allergenic, tearless and environmentally friendly. For the dogs going through their own chemotherapy treatments the hypo-allergenic feature is very important. I am still learning something new every time I go to work about the dogs, the people and the art of grooming in general. A chance to learn something new every single shift!

Unfortunately I am off of full time work now and have been since January of this year due to my worsening health and reliance on a wheelchair during bad days. The weather also greatly affects my pain with rainy, cool weather being the worst. Sometimes it is impossible to even get out of bed. I am currently specializing in grooming pets with disabilities at home. In our current economy this has been a challenge to start a new company and I receive more “cold call” phone calls from people looking for jobs than I do from clients! I have used as many free services online services as possible to advertise including pet websites, building my own web page and using social networking website groups to offer my services.

I plan on holding an Open House in the near future inviting people in for free nail trims and have recruited several groomer friends to volunteer their services on this day successfully. I even built my own front sign for economical reasons. I also put up flyers at all the local pet shops and public bulletin boards to be economical. I do plan on hiring a bather, hopefully someone coping with their own disability and becoming wheelchair accessible in the future which will also help build my business.

The saddest challenges I face every day is that people sometimes are very prejudiced towards a person with a disability and assume they cannot do anything. That is simply not true. With the support of my community and accommodations in the workplace, and positive attitude a person coping with a disabling condition can accomplish anything.

Please feel free to contact me at vanitywithhumanity@gmail.com with any questions or comments!!

Action Shots in Our New Facility!

This is Lesha my 3 yr old rescues German Shephard currently in training to become my assistance dog. She had her jaw broken and tongue slit with a viscous kick to her jaw and was stapled gun through the left ear, neglected and starved all before she was 6 months. I just happened to be there assessing another dog for a client and was told if I could get her out of the kennel I could keep her. I am now training her to be a assistance dog for myself which she excels at.

Since then Cass has successfully trained over 20 Canine Good Neighbours (CKC) and several service dogs including hundreds of pets.
